State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is leading a coalition of 13 states in opposing a proposed house bill that limits a state’s right to protect citizens from toxic chemicals.

The Chemicals in Commerce Act would amend the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976. The 13-state coalition argues that the language of the bill would eliminate much of the authority that states currently need to reduce risks of toxic chemicals.

Current federal law allows both the federal government and the states to address toxic chemicals, with the states often taking the lead in acting to reduce toxic risks to the environment and to citizens.
