The New York Legislature has passed a bill prohibiting marriage for individuals under 17 years old and requires court approval for those between 17 and 18. New York is one of three states that allows children as young as 14 to marry with parental and judicial consent. The measure now goes to Governor Cuomo’s desk for his signature. Child advocates say raising the minimum age can help stop minors trapped in forced marriages, sexual abuse and domestic violence.
