Oneonta & Hartwick College To Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday

January is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Civil Rights Heritage Month on the Hartwick College campus, and the Office of Intercultural Affairs will host and co-sponsor a series of events in commemoration.

The following events are scheduled this month. They are open to the public, unless otherwise noted:
·     Monday, January 16 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemoration Lecture: “Race, Justice and the Death Penalty: A Martin Luther King Day Commemoration.” Hosted by Political Science Department. Guest Speaker: Francis D. Landrey, Esq. P’06.  9 - 11 a.m., Celebration Room, Shineman Chapel House

·     Monday, January 16 - Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Discussion. Hosted by Pluralism Associates League for Students (PALS), 5 - 7 p.m., Chesebro Room, Dewar Hall.  (reserved seating required; RSVP at matthewsh@hartwick.edu)

·     Thursday, January 26 - Dinner and Panel Discussion: “Know Your Rights.” Hosted by Black Student Alliance.  7 - 8 p.m., Chesebro Room, Dewar Hall.  (reserved seating required; RSVP at matthewsh@hartwick.edu).

Also, starting on Monday, January 9, select items from the Civil Rights Era will be on display at the U.S. Pluralism Center, Dewar Hall, 4th floor. Included will be magazines about the assassination of Dr. King and the 1963 March on Washington.

Throughout the month, the Stevens-German Library in Yager Hall will also showcase books on Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.

On Sunday, January 15, members of the Hartwick community will also take part in the Martin Luther King Jr. Citywide Birthday Celebration, from 2 - 4 p.m., at First United Presbyterian Church, Main Street & Walling Avenue in Oneonta.

Associate Dean and Director of the Office of Intercultural Affairs Harry Bradshaw Matthews said, “We are now living in a time period where it might be wise to reflect upon how certain gains were won and how easy it might be to lose them if we do not stay vigilant.”
