Have you ever had a surprise encounter with a deer that left you heart beating out your chest and your car a bit worse for wear if not totaled? Normally, we think of deer as beautiful, gentle, wild animals that are enjoyable to spot in the wild landscape but not if they go somewhere they shouldn't and surprise the heck out of you.

I had my one unpleasant surprise with a deer when I was driving along years ago in my tiny little hatchback car and suddenly, a deer came out of nowhere (as they usually do) and bounced off the front bumper of my car. I was very distraught as I watched the very young, small deer very awkwardly scramble to its feet and limp away. The deer's leg seemed injured since it wasn't moving properly, trying to run away but gimping off into the woods and I felt horrible even though there was nothing I could have done differently.

If you live in the country, chances are you've had a similar incident with a deer. I have heard countless tales from people I know who have been surprised by a deer slamming into their vehicle and in some cases hitting the windshield, but I've never heard of a crash this wild, involving a deer smashing through a school bus window and ending up in the lap of a napping student in Powhatan County, Virginia on April 1 (can you believe it?!) and that's no April Fool's joke!

According to the Powhatan Today Newspaper, the unidentified bus driver had just avoided a deer at 6:00 in the morning when another one ended up crashing right through the bus windshield and landing on a very surprised, sleeping student in the front seat. The bus driver stopped the vehicle, opened the door and the deer scrambled out. No doubt, very scared and a bit worse for wear. I give that bus driver a LOT of credit for being one cool cucumber with that alarming incident! See for yourself in the video below provided by Powhatan County Public Schools...
