Sheriff’s officials say 61-year-old Kathleen Shaffer of Andes is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and possession of stolen property after her 11, 12, 13 and 14-year-old grandchildren allegedly stole the equipment from a seasonal home and a 17-year old helped them take it apart on Shaffer’s property.

Sheriff’s officials say on August 18, the homeowner at a seasonal property on Shaver Hollow Road in Andes discovered the home had been broken into along with a shed where the garden tractor was taken.

Neighborhood interviews led to the discovery of the stolen tractor, dismantled, at Shaffer’s neighboring residence.

Investigators say the kids drove the tractor to grandma’s house and she was made aware of the theft before the juveniles took the machine apart with the help of the 17-year-old.

The children are charged with one count each of burglary, criminal mischief and grand larceny.  The 17-year-old is charged with criminal possession of stolen property.
