The summer of 2020...ok, almost the entire year was a wash for community events due to the coronavirus pandemic. One of the things I missed most was parades that came along with holiday observances/celebrations. We missed the Memorial Day parade in Oneonta, along with the Hometown July 4th/parade. The inability to gather and celebrate with family and friends was a big letdown and that's why it's so wonderful to see that communities are "getting back to normal" (mostly) with these types of celebrations.

In Oneonta, according to AllOtsego, as in year's past, the parade will return on May 31 at 10:00 a.m. Formation will start at 9:00 a.m. at Foothills Performing Arts Center on Market St. and proceed down Main St. for the public to come and view. The City of Oneonta in partnership with Destination Oneonta are still looking for community groups to participate in the parade. Following the parade, there will be a memorial ceremony for veterans at Neahwa Park.

Other communities like Cooperstown are planning events as well. The Lakewood Cemetery Association will hold a Memorial Day gathering at Lakewood Cemetery, in Cooperstown, on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This rain or shine observation of Memorial Day invites area residents to enjoy refreshments, tours, and a commemoration. At 2:30 p.m., there will be a flag raising by the Cooperstown Veterans Club Honor Guard and members of Scout Troop 1254. Organizers ask that attendees wear masks and observe social distancing at this event.

Over in Delaware County, the Sheriff's Department will be holding a ceremony open to the public this Thursday, May 27 at 5:00 p.m. outside Sheriff’s Office located at 280 Phoebe Lane in Delhi. The ceremony is being conducted by the Delaware County Shields.
