Delaware County Sheriff Craig S. DuMond announced that on Tuesday evening, May 12, 2020, members of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division have arrested a Grand Gorge man on burglary and theft charges. The charges are a result of an investigation conducted by members of the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Town of Roxbury Constable.

Early Wednesday morning, April 22, 2020, Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a 911 report of a residential alarm activation at a Lower Meeker Hollow Road, Town of Roxbury, residence. Minutes later, the responding Deputy arrived at that location, observed fresh footwear impressions in the new falling snow and immediately determined that the home and a detached garage had been broken into. Additional law enforcement assistance was requested at the scene, prompting a response by additional Sheriff’s Deputies, members of the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, the Town of Roxbury Constable and New York State Police uniformed Troopers and B.C.I. Investigators, along with members of the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit.

An initial survey of the scene by the responding Deputy led to the recovery of an all-terrain vehicle in a nearby field. It was later determined that the ATV had been stolen from a detached garage at that location. Investigators further determined that keys recovered from the stolen all-terrain vehicle had been reported stolen from that same residence during a February, 2019, burglary that was the subject of an active investigation being conducted the Margaretville State Police Investigators.

A number of leads were quickly developed by Investigators that day and identified potential suspects. To date, the on-going investigation by Sheriff’s Office and State Police Investigators has revealed that on Tuesday evening of April 21, 2020, 24 year-old Charles Dieterich of Grand Gorge, NY, unlawfully entered the residential garage on Lower Meeker Hollow Road and stole a four wheeled all-terrain vehicle. Early on the

morning of April 22nd, 2020, Dieterich returned to the same location with a 16-year-old male. Upon returning, Dieterich activated an audible burglar alarm while gaining entry to the residence at that location. Dietrich then returned to the garage that he had previously burglarized and attempted to steal a second four-wheeler from that location. When that four wheeler would not start following the activation of the burglar alarm, the two ran off into the woods to avoid detection and apprehension by the arriving Deputy.

On Tuesday evening, May 12, 2020, Sheriff’s Investigators arrested and charged 24 year-old Charles Dieterich of Grand Gorge, NY, with the following:

· Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree

· Burglary in the Third Degree

· Grand Larceny in the Third Degree

· Attempted Grand Larceny in the Third Degree

· Endangering the Welfare of a Child

On Tuesday evening, New York State Police Investigators also arrested and charged Dieterich with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree in relation to the stolen keys that were recovered at the scene on April 22. The February, 2019, burglary investigation remains on-going by Margaretville State Police Investigators.
