Herkimer County Emergency Operations Center has released an update for those affected by flooding in the area. The following is available information for residents at this time.

Boil Water Orders

The following areas are advised to boil water before consumption of any kind.

Village of Mohawk

Vanhornesville

Human Services

TDAP (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccinations will be available to responders, residents, and recovery workers in Herkimer county impacted by the recent severe weather.  The vaccinations will be available at the following location:

Village of Mohawk – Mohawk Fire Department, 28 Columbia Street.  Vaccines will be provided between 1p.m. and 3:30p.m.

Food

The Salvation Army has setup food, water, and other human service operations at the following sites for Wednesday, July 3 and Thursday, July 4:

Village of Herkimer –Salvation Army office, 431 N. Prospect St.

  • Coffee and drinks 9a.m. to noon
  • Hot Lunch noon to 2 p.m.
  • Hot Dinner 6a.m. to 8 p.m.

Village of Mohawk—Salvation Army, Vacant Lot at E. Main Street and Bellinger Street next to the Family Dollar.

  • Coffee and Drinks 9a.m. to noon
  • Lunch noon to 2 p.m.
  • Dinner 5 p.m. until gone

Travel

Citizens are recommended to avoid all unnecessary at this time due to widespread debris on the roadways throughout the county. If travel is necessary, drivers are asked to be cognizant of speed, dust raised by vehicles and changing weather conditions.

Power

Restoration of power is continuing throughout the impacted area. The Village of Mohawk will experience low energy levels, therefore citizens should only power necessary items such as refrigerators, lights an hot water heaters.

There is still a boil water advisory for the village of Mohawk and Van Hornesville

Dust and Pollen

Due to high levels of dust and pollen released by the flooding, particle masks will be released to residents.The following locations will have masks available:

  • Village of Herkimer Fire Department, 125 N Washington St. Herkimer, 13350
  • Village of Mohawk Fire Department, 28 Columbia St.  Mohawk, 13407
  • Village of Ilion Municipal Building, 49 Morgan St. Ilion, 13357
  • City of Little Falls Fire Station, 659 East Main St. Little Falls, NY 13365
  • Town of Herkimer at 114 North Prospect Street

Debris Removal

Debris removal will continue throughout affected areas and officials understand the need for removal of private home debris as well. Any debris requiring removal by municipalities should leave said debris in between sidewalk and curb. Please make sure debris isn't blocking and drainage grates.

Abandoned Vehicles

All abandoned and displaced vehicles including construction equipment, campers, lawnmowers. ATVs, and snowmobiles should be reported to the Herkimer County 911 center by calling their non-emergency number 315-866-0974. Law enforcement will coordinate their removal.

Other Warnings

Citizens are recommended to stay informed as to what is happening around them by listening to radio reports and watching television. People should also stay away from downed power lines and check for structural damage before entering buildings.

Governor Cuomo has ordered the activation of the NYS Flood Helpline to aid residents affected by widespread flooding across areas of New York State. New Yorkers can call the helpline for assistance, including important local contact information for health and safety tips, locations of tetanus shots, what to do in case of an oil spill or power outage, mental health assistance, and for other recovery needs as well. It is stressed that life threatening emergencies should be reserved for 911.
