As we move through the easing of the pandemic rules and guidelines, many of us are waiting for another big shoe to drop.  And that shoe is the  re-opening of all movie theaters.  It has been over a year since all of us movie goers have been able to enjoy our favorite pastime of sitting in a dark theater, popcorn and soda in hand, and watching the best, both old and new, of Hollywood on the giant screen. We cheered when the big Southside Cinema opened its screens recently at the Southside Mall in Oneonta.

Now it looks like another shoe is going to drop for the residents of Walton, N.Y.

The Walton Theatre has just announced that it will reopen over the Memorial Day weekend, more than a year after COVID-19 forced the historic venue to close its doors to the public.

The opening weekend will feature the showing of “Cruella,” a Disney film starring Emma Stone that opens nationwide this Friday. Showtimes are 6:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and 1:00 p.m. next Wednesday. Officials say the theater has been reconfigured to accommodate social distancing and masks are required until everyone’s seated.

“On behalf of myself and the board, we’re extremely pleased to be able to reopen the Walton Theatre,” said Edward Snow Sr., Mayor of the Village of Walton. “We’re excited to provide the public with an opportunity to come together to enjoy great entertainment, and just as importantly, to help restore the spirit of community that makes Walton a special place.”

The Walton Theatre is one of our area's great local movie houses.  It opened on April 21, 1914 with a live professional/amateur production called "Within the Law."  The show played to a sold out audience of 1,500 on that opening night.  Movies would soon follow in the years ahead.
