March for Babies Oneonta

Hundreds of people will be at Wilber Park to take part in the 2012 March for Babies on Saturday. In addition to the three-mile walk that starts at 10 a.m. with registration at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided by the Holiday Inn.

The Oneonta March for Babies brings together families, companies and volunteers to raise money so that more babies can be born happy and healthy.

May 1 is Paint the County Purple Day

In order to increase awareness of this year’s Chenango County Relay for Life event, Tuesday May 1 has been designated “paint the county purple” day.

The Relay for Life team is also reaching out to Chenango County restaurants to put out purple place mats and napkins. The Chenango County Relay for Life is sponsored by the American Cancer society to help fund cancer research. This year’s relay is July 20-21 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich. The event raised $155,000 last year and is well on its way to meet or exceed that goal this year. For more information e-mail relay.chenango@gmail.com

Oneonta to Replace Water Meters

Oneonta will be replacing all water meters in the city over the next few months.

Pedal Valve, a subcontractor for the city, will begin replacing water meters on May 1.

If a resident or business is at the premises at the time the contractor arrives, he or she will request access to change your meter at that time. If it is not a good time or if no one is home, he or she will leave information requesting the property owner contact Pedal Valve to schedule an appointment to have the meter changed.

Those who have questions or would like to schedule an appointment can call 434-6193 with questions.

Meter change outs will take approximately 30 minutes and a person 18 years or older must be present.

New Bill Requires Surveillance Cameras at Care Facilities

A bill introduced in the state legislature this week would require state-run facilities for the developmentally disabled to have surveillance cameras installed.

The legislation, called Paula’s Law, has been introduced before; it was proposed in 2008 when a Sullivan County woman was sexually assaulted in her group home. The attacker was never identified or found. The woman died later from injuries incurred from the incident.

The measure has support in both the assembly and the senate. The state would be required to have cameras at the entrances and exits of state-run facilities.

Cuomo Announces Power Allocations

The first round of power allocations under governor Cuomo’s Recharge New York program were announced yesterday, giving 517 businesses and not-for-profit organizations in the state low-cost power to enterprises in order to save and create jobs, and invest billions in capital investments.

In the southern tier region, the N.Y Power Authority has recommended 600 kilowatts for Jobani in New Berlin, 500 kilowatts for Norwich Pharmacueticals, and 606 kilowatts for unison industries.

In Delaware County power allocations will go to Margarettville Hospital, Mountain Side Farms Inc, and Mountainside Residential Care Center.

Corning Inc. in Oneonta will also get a power allocation.
