Morgan Wallen’s ‘Cover Me Up’ Music Video Draws Awareness to Veterans With PTSD [WATCH]
To further the steam gained recently by Morgan Wallen's 2018 cover of Jason Isbell's “Cover Me Up,” Wallen and director Justin Clough crafted an eight-plus-minute music video that addresses how PTSD impacts soldiers after they return home. Press play above to watch.
Wallen went from a regular on 2018 Artists to Watch lists to the runaway success that comes with a hit like “Whiskey Glasses” and an opening spot on Luke Combs’ Beer Never Broke My Heart Tour. The fruits of Wallen’s success include nearly 20 million streams on Spotify alone for his gorgeous nod to one of Isbell’s finest compositions.
Wallen's "Cover Me Up" music video compassionately shows how some soldiers bring an emotional piece of warzones back home. Just as poignantly, the characters in the short film demonstrate patient loved ones’ roles in helping ease PTSD victims back into civilian life. Eight minutes hardly covers enough ground to reach a happy ending, but viewers are left feeling that the struggling young soldier came home to a much-needed support system.
Wallen keeps his version of "Cover Me Up" -- the first song on Isbell's critically acclaimed 2013 album Southeastern -- simple, and faithful to the bare-bones original. The rising star says he appreciate the song because "you can just feel the true emotion in it."
“I think the line, 'I made it through because somebody knew I was meant for someone' -- I take that as God," Wallen explains. "There’s a lot of things we go through and we don’t even know why ... At the end of the day, God has a purpose and a plan for you, and that’s kind of how I take that."
Wallen’s run of dates with Combs culminates with a two-night stand at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Dec. 12-13. His own Monster Energy Outbreak Tour Presents: Morgan Wallen’s Whiskey Glasses Roadshow kicks off Jan. 2 in Grand Rapids, Mich., with opening acts Jon Langston and Ashland Craft.
