Governor Cuomo states, "Local governments are critical partners in meeting the State's ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reductions required by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. New York State continues to support the meaningful steps municipalities are taking to adapt to climate change while improving quality of life for local residents."

Support in this mission for a cleaner, greener New York State will come in the form of selected contractors, referred to as Climate Leadership Coordinators, who will work for and support climate action at the local level across the state by doing outreach, education, planning, capacity-building, and assistance with project implementation. The new program is funded by the state’s Environmental Protection Fund.

Climate Leadership Coordinators will utilize New York's Climate Smart Communities Certification program, a program that recognizes municipalities for taking climate action and in turn will offer those municipalities technical assistance, grants, and rebates for electric vehicles to help reduce harmful fuel emissions in that community. Along with helping communities improve air quality, coordinators will help with building code and land-use decisions, transportation planning, the adoption of smart-growth policies, and helping to facilitate local climate change adaptation and resilience.
