Charlie Daniels was best-known for his own popular band, the Charlie Daniels Band, but before he formed that group, he played guitar alongside folk and rock music legend Bob Dylan.

From 1969 to 1970, Daniels showed his skills and played electric bass on three of Dylan's albums, Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning. It was after this that Daniels started to really hone his craft as a musician. The two are said to have remained amicable, and Dylan was supportive of the tribute album Daniels released in 2014.

That album, Off the Grid — Doin’ It Dylan, doesn't actually feature many of the songs from the time period Daniels was playing with Dylan — except for one, "Country Pie." Daniels chose songs that better suited his voice, instead of performing Dylan's best-known hits. Thus, "Lay Lady Lay" and "Rainy Day Woman" aren't on the 10-song album, but country versions of songs including "Gotta Serve Somebody" and "I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight" do find a spot on the tribute album.

Daniels died on Monday (July 6) at the age of 83 after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. He was laid to rest on Friday (July 10) in his adopted home state of Tennesee.
