Worcester School Board Approves Study of Merger with Schenevus
At Tuesday night's Worcester Board of Education meeting, the board voted 5-0 to approve going ahead with the study which would look at the impact of staffing, financial impacts as Schenevus Central School District would become part of the Worcester Central School District. The study will explore options for building and classroom configurations within a merged district..
The annexation merger study, which costs $50,000 is being funded by a $25,000 grant from the Regional Economic Development Council, with the Schenevus and Worcester school districts splitting the remaining cost. The study will be conducted by Castallo & Silky Education Consultants LLC. This consulting firm expects to have the study completed in early 2021. Following the results of the study, the two school districts would each have their boards vote on a merger. If the merger moves forward following a vote, then the public would get to vote on it.
Commenting on the study, Worcester Central School Superintendent Tim Gonzales says, “An annexation is the most appropriate merger option for our community. For us to move forward with a merger study, the board felt this was the most responsible way to proceed.”
